MOTION PICTURES FEATURING LACED CORSETS

(and a few "Merry Widows!)

UPDATES RESOURCES HOME TIPS ACCESSORIES FEATURES EMAIL GALLERIES CORSETS CHAT PUBLICATIONS PINUPS ADS TEXT DICTIONARY FORUM

Some films have been rated as to their corset-visibility, using little 's.

One denotes little corsetry, while is a VERY GOOD corset-film.

Films with "lacing" scenes are denoted with "Lacing".

Films with corsets UNDER gowns only are denoted with "Gowns".

Obviously, these ratings have little to do with a critical evaluation of the film itself.

NOTE THAT, in some cases, DESCRIPTIONS AND EXAMPLES OF THE TYPE OF CORSET DEPICTED are included

1986---- Lacing RADIO DAYS (MIA FARROW)

Grandmother being laced into her old ladies' corset just before World War II.

1957---- Gowns RAINTREE COUNTY (ELIZABETH TAYLOR & EVA MARIE SAINT

For the sumptuous, tight-bodiced gowns only!  There is one very brief shot of Ms. Taylor's corset: she is changing her clothes, and there is a glimpse of her period underwear, sturdy white stays and a tremendous hoop to hold out her magnificent skirts.

Stephen K. writes:

I have been looking at a biography of Elizabeth Taylor:  Liz, by C. David Heymann, published in London by Heinemann (but obviously a British edition of an American book) 1995. Daniel Mann, director of Butterfield 8, discusses working on it with her during one of the periods when she was gaining weight:

'"I considered her caustic and overindulged by all the years of stardom she'd enjoyed. We made a mistake in trying to pamper her. M-G-M demonstrated a willingness to do almost anything to appease her so as not to jeopardize the film. I imagine these were difficult times for her. She seemed a little rearranged in the head, probably because of the circumstance of Mike Todd's dying and her becoming immediately involved with Eddie Fisher. When she first arrived in New York, she appeared unattractive. She was overweight and had dark circles under her eyes. The reason she looked great in the film was because she received a great deal of assistance. The clothes she wore in Butterfield 8 had to be constantly refitted. Special undergarments and corsets were employed to hold her body in shape. She had lost the firmness of youth and looked matronly before her time. I also determined that she couldn't see a thing without contact lenses; she was myopic."

out without oe. 'That was a hard part about the movie for me. The corset was so tight, I couldn't breathe when I bent over. I wanted to die,' Jewel
recalls.  She also notes the amusing adversity she had with the tight fitting period clothing she had to wear; 'At first I was so into the corset. I thought
<Oh  you’ll never get me out of this. This is an addiction.>  Then you get bruised kidneys and you start going <Uggghh it hurts.>"" (quoted here, but Stephen
can't track down the original URL).

1954----ROSE MARIE (ANN BLYTH)

Scene is of Marjorie Main lacing up Ms. Blyth, who acts the part of the young Rose Marie blooming into womanhood from a childhood of buckskins
in the Canadian woods. Short scene, with the typical sort of feminine    corset repartee of Fifties Hollywood.

1955----THE ROSE TATTOO (ANNA MAGNANI)

"I haven't seen this film, but was led to it by a search on Corbis. Searching on "tight corset" produced Ms. Magnani in a black dress squeezing into a tight
white corset. The image comments explain that this was a publicity picture of her costume for the film
The Rose Tattoo:  'Her role...called for Miss Magnani
to labor into the too-tight girdle for the cameras.'
I can't say whether she wears the corset visibly in the film, but if not we have first-class evidence here
that she was well corseted underneath!"

breathe in those costumes. It's like your lungs can only do so much."

Set in the mid 19th century, Ms. Bolkan appears as the famous adventuress, Lola Montez. In one scene she is shown dancing with Malcolm McDowell wearing
