MOTION PICTURES FEATURING LACED CORSETS

(and a few "Merry Widows!)

UPDATES RESOURCES HOME TIPS ACCESSORIES FEATURES EMAIL GALLERIES CORSETS CHAT PUBLICATIONS PINUPS ADS TEXT DICTIONARY FORUM

Some films have been rated as to their corset-visibility, using little 's.

One denotes little corsetry, while is a VERY GOOD corset-film.

Films with "lacing" scenes are denoted with "Lacing".

Films with corsets UNDER gowns only are denoted with "Gowns".

Obviously, these ratings have little to do with a critical evaluation of the film itself.

NOTE THAT, in some cases, DESCRIPTIONS AND EXAMPLES OF THE TYPE OF CORSET DEPICTED are included

2013-----MACHETE KILLS ()      Images

1970-----MACHO CALLAHAN ()

Occasional Western beer hall corset appearance

1934---- MADAME BOVARY--French (VALENTINE TESSIER)--Low Victorian style

Madame's corset makes a few "cameo" appearances--nothing spectacular. The nice part is that one need not read the subtitles to realize what they are! <g>

1949---- Gowns  MADAME BOVARY-- (JENNIFER JONES)

1975---- MADAME BOVARY -- TVS  (FRANCESCA ANNIS)--Low Victorian style     Still-clips

                 An interesting undressing scene.

1991---- Lacing  MADAME BOVARY (ISABELLE HUPPERT)--Victorian style        Still-clips

One short bedroom scene with Miss Huppert in her corset.

2000---- Gowns/Lacing  MADAME BOVARY -- TVM (FRANCES O'CONNOR)--Victorian style   2 Still-clips

Several nice tight-bodiced crinoline gowns. Bedroom scene with heroine in bed and an impressive set of hoops on a stand in the window waiting for her. Discussion on health issues in pregnancy. Doctor Bovary lays down the law: "Absolutely no more tight-lacing!" A couple of short corset scenes including one seduction in a wood. Scene on the wedding night with the new Madame Bovary in elaborate corset. Doctor Bovary lacing his wife. Extreme close up of the laces being pulled out, later 2-shots of them together showing what he is doing in context. She criticizes his technique and says he isn't doing it right, "We must get a maid." He again doubts that she should be "tight-lacing" and finally announces, "It won't go any tighter," and ties the laces off. Also, One brief corset scene, where Madame Bovary is being undressed by her ecstatic lover. He unhooks her busk without loosening the laces first. (Review compliments of Stephen.)

1953----Gowns  MADAME DE... --French (DANIELLE DARRIEUX)

Possibly no 'naked' corsets visible, but Mademoiselle Darrieux's waist is stunning

2008----MADE OF HONOR (MICHELLE MONAGHAN)

                    One short visible corset scene.

1951---- Gowns  THE MAGIC BOX (MARIA SCHELL)

Nice attention to detail in many corsetted gowns.

1942---- THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS (DOLORES COSTELLO)

1998-
2000----THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN -- TVS  (LAURIE HOLDEN)

From an interview with Miss Holden: "He leads me to my own dressing room. With my name on it. OK, it was just printed on some tape that they stuck on the door, but it is my name. And
that is how all the guest stars have their names done too. Geez, this is real. An assistant comes to help me dress. I have my own dresser!!!  I am both embarrassed and impressed. But I
don't get too carried away. I need a dresser because you can't get into a corset without help. A CORSET. I am going to wear a corset! Kelly, my dresser, actually put her knee in my back
and pulled those strings. This was right out of Gone With the Wind.  Although Scarlett's waist was a tad smaller than mine. OK, a lot smaller than mine. My costume consists of a
camisole, corset, a layered petticoat, 2 bustles, heavy black stockings and boots.  A multiple layered skirt with a bustled, gathered back, a jacket with velvet trim and a cute little hat.
Gloves and a bag finished the look. It was 110 and my multi-layered costume was wool. Wool. I am surprised they didn't give me an overcoat in case I got a chill. The costume was a soft
brown plaid. A very authentic costume, down to every detail, including the earbobs. The costume was great, the boots were nice. But the corset was a problem. And the bustle  too. I
discovered that the corset was not quite as uncomfortable after you got used to it. But I learned you never bend over while in a corset. It stabs you. And it hurts. And it is hard to get
up again. The bustle made it very hard to sit down. I felt like someone was following me every where, real close. Only to discover, it was me. Or at least my bustle.

1964---- MAIL ORDER BRIDE (BARBARA LUNA   Images

1951----  LA MAISON BONNADIEU French (FRANÇOISE ARNOUL & DANIELLE DARRIEUXImages and some commentary

1976---- LA MAÎTRESSE--French (BULLE OGIER) Fetish latex style Still-clip*

A professional dominatrix (Ms. Ogier) falls for the character played by Gerard Depardieu. When Ogier goes down into her dungeon only to find her corsets are too tight and she cannot breathe; she has to struggle back upstairs to be freed by Depardieu. The groans are priceless.

1959----Gowns MAKE MINE A MILLION (SABRINA a/k/a Norma Sykes)  8 Images

Sabrina appears in a short cameo at the beginning of the film. She wears a very tight lamé sheath dress that shows off every detail of her amazingly corseted
figure.  It is claimed that her measurements in her heyday were 42-17-36.

UNK----THE MAKING OF A LEGEND, "GONE WITH THE WIND"--TVM (VARIED ACTRESSES)

Various women try out for the part of "Scarlett" and use the "Mamie" lacing scene to audition.

UNK----MAN AND HIS MUSIC (ACTRESS UNKNOWN)

1953----MAN IN THE ATTIC (CONSTANCE SMITH)

1998---- Gowns  THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK (JUDITH GODRECHE)

1955----Lacing MAN WITH THE GUN  a/k/a 'The Trouble Shooter' (JAN STERLING & BARBARA LAWRENCE)
               Vidclip of relevant scenes

Vain, vacuous and delightfully pretty Barbara Lawrence is in the town's 'emporium' trying on a new corset when her boss visits. Note that the character in the stills on LISA's page is
definitely Ann, played by Barbara Lawrence. Jan Sterling as  Nelly also has an amazingly tiny waist, but we don't get to see her corset.
     Review by Stephen K.

1956---- MANOEVERZWILLING--Austrian (DORIS KIRSCHNER)--Victorian Style

Hanna receiving her guests, while wearing only a corset.

1964---- MARY POPPINS (JULIE ANDREWS) Still-clip  More here

Ms. Andrews sports a fairly tight red waist-cinch outside of her dress.

1994---- MARY SHELLEY'S FRANKENSTEIN (HELENA BONHAM CARTER)--19c strapped style    12 Still-clips

                    A kind of beautiful corset-gown.

1920---- Gowns  THE MARK OF ZORRO (MARGUERITE DE LA MOTTE)

Silent film.

1998---- THE MASK OF ZORRO ()   6 still-clips plus

A very lame Hollywood "corset" (which does not look boned) for the small dueling scene. However, Ms. Zeta Jones looks good in it, as she has a very slight figure. The slit petticoat looks blatantly anachronistic, though...

1994-----Gowns MAVERICK (JODIE FOSTER)

Talented Miss Foster has never been more attractive that how she appears in this film: in a very tight-waisted blue evening gown (at the beginning).

1968---- Gowns MAYERLING (CATHERINE DENEUEVE, AVA GARDNER & GENEVIÈVE PAGE)    Still clips

                Ms. Page is exceptional!

1963---- McLINTOCK! (MAUREEN O'HARA)     More material

A chase scene worth catching as Ms. O'Hara slowly ends up wearing only her green and white corset.

1956---- MEET ME IN LAS VEGAS (

2016---- Gowns MERCY STREET--TVS-- ()      Clips

1925---- THE MERRY WIDOW (SALLY O'HARA)

Dressing scene with Ms. McDonald in a corset, attended by three maids. One short scene.   TIGHT!

1952---- THE MERRY WIDOW (LANA TURNER)    Still, publicity shot & on-set shot  --Fifties Victorian/Wasp waist

Miss Turner in a couple of impressive corsets. Two very long scenes. TIGHT!

Quote from Curtis Bernhardt, the director: "Lana Turner in a white satin corset trimmed in lace and blue satin ribbons is enough to make anyone pine for the good old days."
(The article that contained this quote also noted that Turner's waist was laced to 21 inches for the part.)

1965----MERVEILLEUSE ANGÉLIQUE ("The Road to Versailles") French (MICHÈLE MERCIER)      Still-clips

This was the second episode of five in  the 'Angélique' film series.

1986---- MESMERIZED ()--Hollywood Victorian Style Still-clip  Video

Through the peephole, Miss Foster undresses to corset, ignorant of the "trespasser."

2004---- METHOD (ELIZABETH HURLEY)

A thoroughly corseted romp in the woods.

1982---- A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S SEX COMEDY (MARY STEENBURGEN)--Stage style (light boned)

Ms. Steenburgen wears her corset in the kitchen, probably to titillate her husband, and before going to bed.   There is another example in the woods.

1960---- THE MILLIONAIRESS ()         Still-clips plus

Ms. Loren removes her dress, and shows off a black leather corset, attempting to make an impression on her favorite doctor (Peter Sellers).

2014----A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST ( &

UNK---- MIQUETTE AND HER MOTHER (DANIELE DELOEME)

, optimized by Crinolyn

Stephen: "Notice that the machine is a copy of the one in the early Victorian cartoon, 'A Correct View of the New Machine for Winding Up the Ladies.'
The prop was sold at auction in 2012."

2012----LES MISÉRABLES  (SAMANTHA BARKS)

Samantha wears a corset in her role as Éponine.

2003----THE MISSING (CATE BLANCHETT)     Still-clips

1986----THE MISSION (CHERIE LUNGHI)

2007----MISS POTTER (RENÉE ZELLWEGER)

"The costumes include tightly laced corsets, even for the 12-year-old actress Lucy Boynton - one article reports that she described the corset as 'agony,'
while another quotes her as saying: 'It was part of what they wore in those days. It was okay at first but then it started digging in.'" (Charles S.)

2005----MR. AND MRS. SMITH (ANGELINA JOLIE)    4 Still-clips

1990---- MR. DESTINY (RENE RUSSO)--Modern lingerie style

Only one shot of Rene in full, erotic, corsetted attire* (to seduce Jim Bulushi, her husband), but it's worth it!

2006----Gowns MOLIÈRE --French  (LAURA MORANTE)

1996---- MOLL FLANDERS (ROBIN WRIGHT PENN)

Features a lacing-up scene with Ms. Wright saying to her maid unattractively, "Strap me up," and the process is over in seconds, without making a visible difference to her waist,
while her stays are very obviously not laced properly close afterwards. When we see her from behind, they are close at the top and get more and more open towards the bottom. (Reviewed by Stephen K.)

(See The Fortunes and Misfortunes of Moll Flanders, a sequel)

2007----LA MÔME a/k/a "La Vie en rose" --French (MARION COTILLARD)

1951-----MONTE CARLO BABY (AUDREY HEPBURN)     Still-clips

1971----MON ONCLE ANTOINE --French-Canadian  (LYNE CHAMPAGNE)

There's a rather exotic scene  where Alexandrine, the haughty wife of the local notary, calls into the village store to inquire whether her special corset has been delivered. The lady
proprietor tells her it has arrived and suggests she goes upstairs for a fitting. Two boys working in the store sneak upstairs and watch through a crack in the door while she undresses
and tries it on. Sadly, there are only brief glimpses of the fitting but the atmosphere surrounding Alexandrine's visit and the look of pleasure on her face when she is told it has arrived
is compelling.  The action starts about two minutes into the clip and runs for about 4 minutes overall.    (Raymond S.)

1961---- Gowns  MORGAN THE PIRATE (VALERIE LAGRANGE)

2005----MONSTER IN  LAW (JANE FONDA & JENNIFER LOPEZ)

In 'Supplemental Materials' on the DVD disk 2, under 'fashions,' there is a very quick scene and comment  about corsets.  Appears that the wedding gown has a built-in corset.
Miss Lopez is shown wearing that gown in the wedding scene.

1971-----MORTE A VENEZIA--Italian "Death in Venice" (CAROLE ANDRÉ)  --Click here for stillclips

1947----MOTHER WORE TIGHTS (BETTY GRABLE)

Miss Grable's gowns are very definitely showing that there is a corset under them, even, at least in one instance, with the lacing panel.

2001---- MOULIN ROUGE (NICOLE KIDMAN) Victorian style

Ms. Kidman certainly knows how to compliment a corset!

UNK---- MRS. THORNTON (GREER GARSON)

Dressing scene with Ms. Garson corset on pedestal (Belle Époque style).

1971----MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE (MARIA PERSCHY)    2 Still-clips

2008---MURDOCH MYSTERIES - TVS
present
Season 8, Episode 12 "The Devil Wears Whalebone" - Murdoch discovers that fashion is murder when a model is killed during a protest at a designer corset show.

There's a curious mix of historical accuracy and 21st century revisionism, not unexpected in a show like this. And some of the 'science' around corsetry and corsets, including a unique
one at the heart of this mystery, is stretched a bit too far. But take it for what it is: light entertainment, not to be taken too seriously, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. The final scene is an
unexpected surprise, quite suggestive, but tasteful and well done.

The entire episode can be streamed for free from CBC's website.  It's also available to purchase for a small fee here.  Plus there is a short 'making of' video available on both CBC and

YouTube. These links work from within Canada. International copyright rules being what they are, your mileage may vary from outside the country
.

2001----THE MUSKETEER (MENA SUVARI)

Limited instances of corsets worn as outerwear (front-laced bodices).

1971---- THE MUSIC LOVERS (GLENDA JACKSON) Short cincher style

At least one scene plainly showing a corset-clad woman.

1951----MY FORBIDDEN PAST a/k/a "Carriage Entrance"  (AVA GARDNER & JANIS CARTER)

Miss Carter was quoted as saying: "I had to take exercises before I even could get the corset on. I couldn’t eat while I  was wearing it. And I scarcely could breathe. We [Carter and
Gardner] tried to eat just once. It was agony."

1975----MY FAVORITE BUTLER a/k/a "Champagnealopp" and  "The Groove Room"  (SUE LONGHURST)

Three scenes in this one.  In the first, while a Victorian gent and lady have tea, her maid and his butler move in and out in the background while doing a striptease, and we see the maid
unfasten and cast off her corset. In the next, the maid comes in from the rain and the butler strips off her soaked clothes.  Lastly, the Victorian gent unbuttons the bodice of the lady
and is stymied by her corset.

1961---Gowns LES MYSTÈRES DE PARIS  French  (

1947---Gowns MY WILD IRISH ROSE (ANDREA KING)  Edwardian style
