From Vogue, 15th march, 1952

A phrase here that ought to please all:
"Now, the midriff is lashed to its smallest circumference"

'New Look' talk, from Jörge:

"British model Barbara Goalen was an icon of the 1950s.  She was the model of
perhaps the most famous photograph of Dior, at right.
Barbara stated that she had
a natural  18 inch waist, and maintained that
even after she had borne two children."

This picture, sent by Robin B., shows a lady dressed in a variation
of the
'New Look' style (late 40s-early 50s).  While she lacks
an extremely full skirt, her waist does appear corseted.

Thomas R. writes:
"Although this is not necessarily germane to LISA, I did want to steer you to an interesting site ART IS LIFE (Ed: cannot find the URL), which features an article on the fashion model Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn, who had a documented natural waist span of only 17 inches! She of course was on the slender, not voluptuous, side, but at least was no Kate Moss. Save for Vampira and possibly a handful of other shapely women, this is the smallest natural waist that has anything like a real foundation."

Ed: Images of Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn graced the cover of every fashion magazine during the 1930's, 40's and 50's. Known for her seventeen inch waistline, Lisa carried a cloth tape measure which she handed to any who doubted this (implausible?) measurement. She worked hard to maintain this figure, expounding the importance of eating in small quantities (she herself ate ten small meals per day).
